Into the River

Astra was glad when she first noticed a slight current, as otherwise in the
total darkness she would have had no idea of which direction she should
swim
in. From the faintly heard raised guards' voices, she guessed that her
escape must have
been
discovered by now, which was no more than she had expected. She did not
expect that they would come in after her, but was afraid that they might
know of some point beyond the sewer at which they could intercept her.
She wondered what had happened to Fred and Velus. Had either or both of them been captured too? If so, it seemed unlikely that, should she manage to escape, she would find herself in any position to go back and try to free them. Her clothes were too constricting to be very suitable for swimming, and she hoped that she would find a way out of the water before too long. Something brushed against her leg; she tried to kick it away, hoping that it wasn't a rat. The current was getting much stronger now, and she began to hear a rumbling noise some distance ahead. This gradually grew louder, and she realised that it was the sound of falling water. There must be an outflow up ahead. A few seconds later she found herself falling in the midst of a torrent of water (and other things). Ten feet below, she splashed into the river that apparently was used to get rid of the sewage.
