Frederica's (or maybe Cecilia's) Identity Crisis

Lord Damian was intrigued by this petite, pretty girl. She was dressed
like a
miner's daughter, but her accent seemed much more cultured than her
clothes would suggest.
She surely must be insane, but something made him call two of his most
trusted advisors
to join them.
Frederica repeated her story for them - the same sanitised version, in which she had been held prisoner by the dragon for five years with no mention of having been Lord Fred. She was convinced that she was the daughter of King Emry and Queen Sovay, and that her name was Frederica, but her earlier conviction that she had been twelve when she had disappeared was now replaced in her mind by uncertainty. Perhaps she had been sixteen? Wasn't that what Belboz had said? Also had Belboz necessarily allowed for her five years spent as Fred when he transformed her back? Perhaps her body was now five years younger than it ought to be? The others told her, whjen she asked them how old she looked, that she appeared to be about nineteen, give or take a year or two, which did not help her at all. "Tell me about King Emry and Queen Sovay's other children," she asked, hoping to get some clues. "Well, Princess Cecilia's elder brother is Prince Gunther, though when he is traveling he prefers to be known simply as Sir Gunther to avoid drawing attention to himself. A year after the Princess disappeared, he too vanished." Frederica's mind was in a whirl. That was impossible! Gunther was her lover, not her brother. She had been betrothed to him. [8806] But could that be right? She couldn't have been engaged to him at the age of twelve, could she? Some countries went in for child marriages amongst their royalty, but not Allaria. Her memories seemed to be alarmingly inconsistent. Which ones were true - if any - and which were false? Could what Belboz had told her be lies? But her memories had seemed to come back to her and confirmed what he had said. Could he have ensorceled her to remember things that were not true? But he had undone Crucius's curse on her, hadn't he, and restored her to her rightful body? A little voice in her head said: But supposing it's not your rightful body? For all you know, in reality you could be anyone at all, male or female.
