Not Another Cave!
The Never Ending Quest - Episode 18824

It had been a bright morning when the Princess left Mudspot, down the
trail through
the glen between the foothills of the Shreken, but this close to
the mountains the weather could change rapidly. During the day the clouds
had gathered
and then gotten
greyer and greyer. By mid-afternoon, the tops of the Shreken behind her
were no longer
visible, and she knew that rain was not far away.
When the rain eventually arrived, an hour or so before dusk, it was cold and quickly became heavy. It was not only highly unpleasant but potentially dangerous, for Frederica knew that people who had spent a night out in such conditions had sometimes died of exposure. So it was important that she should find shelter quickly. Then she spotted what looked like a cave set into the steep ridge to the left of the path she was on. She wasn't overkeen to go into a cave again after her recent experiences, but beggars couldn't be choosers she reminded herself. Approaching it through the fading light of a rainy late afternoon, when she got close enough to see it more clearly she found that it really was a cave. Looking inside, it was fortunately empty and showed no sign of having been inhabited recently. Beyond the four foot high opening, it was just high enough for her to stand upright. It was some six feet wide and went about ten feet into the hillside. It wouldn't be very comfortable, but at least it would keep her dry. She took off her boots, and then her sodden pants and blouse, hoping that they would be more or less dry by the morning. (At least her now short hair would dry fairly quickly.) Then she had a meal from the supplies in her pack. By this time it was almost dark outside and even darker in the cave, so resting her head against her pack she attempted to get some sleep.
