"Damn!" Fred thought. How had Emry learnt so quickly that he was to be found in this village and that he had been aiding Prince Cederik? Clearly magery must have been involved, in order to get a message to Emry and then his orders to these soldiers, all since yesterday evening. Was the mage he had just met the man who was behind it? And was this linked with the abduction of his companions, or was that a separate mystery?

But there was no time to ponder these questions. Fighting when outnumbered by ten to two would clearly be suicidal. Surrender was out of the question. That left only flight. Fortunately the soldiers were on foot, so the two of them might have a chance. "Run!" he shouted to Alfredo, and then he turned and showed Alfredo by example what he meant.

  1. They would surely have been quickly captured, had not a group of a dozen dark-complexioned men - the woodsman whom Fred had seen that morning amongst them - suddenly burst out of the woods and engaged the soldiers.
  2. Alfredo was elderly, and so was easily overhauled by the soldiers.
  3. A crossbow bolt struck Fred in the thigh.
