The guards had untied Astra's hands before pushing her into the privy,
after
she had pointed out to them that she could hardly see to her business
unless
her hands were free. Now, as she hesitated as she tried to decide what to
do, one of the guards called out:
"How long are you going to be?"
"Not much longer," she called back. She would have to make her mind up quickly, if the guards were not to become suspicious. Overpowering the guards was not an option. These men might be none too bright, but they had enough experience for one man to stand well back from the door and cover it with a crossbow. If she attacked his colleague, he would shoot her down before she could reach him. Astra came to the decision that this might be the best chance to escape that she would get, and she was not prepared to spend any more time as a captive. Taking a deep breath - the air might not be exactly pure, but it was the best she would get for a while - she eased herself through the hole.
