Lord Fred has survived to the Civil War. He had killed kin so he was cursed to be immortal. And sterile. So he couldn't create anymore kin to kill.
Well, anyway, the Civil War raged across the land. It was still early enough in the horrible troubles that overblown society idiots traveled to the battlefields to watch people shoot each other.
And this is just the sort of scene that Lord Fred had stumbled upon.
