As If We Could Forget Omega...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 18571

The Doctor

Betty laughs softly and mutters something to herself. But I've become accustomed, over the past ten years, to her habit of talking to herself -- or, more often, to her red-haired analog -- in terms no one else can be expected to understand, and I pay little attention to her now. My mind is moving in other directions, calling up a host of memories surrounding that familiar name.

Omega.

He was a great hero of mine, once, one of the greatest figures in Time Lord history. A stellar engineer without parallel, the man who harnessed the power of a black hole and ensured the supremacy of his people over time and space. Gallifreyan history portrays him as a martyr, destroyed by his own creation in the very hour of his ultimate triumph. There was a time when I would have considered it the highest honor imaginable to meet him, but, as so often proves to be the case, reality was far less simple or pleasant than the picture painted by the history books. Omega had survived his descent into the black hole that consumed him, holding himself together by sheer force of will until will that was all that remained of him. And in his millennia alone, abandonded, as he saw it, by those for whom he had sacrificed everything, he grew bitter, twisted and evil. I was, with the help of my other selves, able to destroy him. It was not a victory I had relished.

And now it seems that that victory was not so final, after all. How Omega managed to survive the collapse of his self-contained universe, Rassilon either doesn't know or, for typically inscrutable reasons of his own, doesn't want to say. He's similarly vague concerning the details of how he learned of Omega's continued existence; irritating, but hardly out of character. And who am I, after all, to question Rassilon?

Well, all right, perhaps I will question Rassilon, but now scarcely seems to be the time. Especially as he has one more extremely disturbing piece of news to report...

  1. It seems my biodata records have gone missing from Gallifrey...
