Hannah was now thirteen years old—in fact, she celebrated her birthday today. She had been living alone with her dear Uncle Belboz for ten years. She couldn't remember her parents, of course, but she knew what had happened to them from her uncle's stories—they had been destroyed by the fearsome dragon who lived not far from here. She was generally a brave girl, but was absolutely terrified at any mention of the dragon. She was waiting for her uncle to arrive with whatever surprise he had in store for her; he'd promised to be here soon. She trusted him with all her heart—he was the only one who took care of her.
