An Impossible Choice

"You can't possibly do anything else," the dragon replied. "Your troops expect it of you. That is their way. You will lose their respect if you show any mercy to a soldier who attacked you. They will see it as weakness. And a captain who does not have the respect of her troops is of no use to me. So I'm afraid that I must insist."

1. "May the gods forgive me," Fred muttered, and then she thrust her sword deep into the dragon woman's skull.
2. "If I am to be your captain, I must have qualities that you value. So please let me do things my way." Fred held his breath, waiting for the dragon's response. Had she just doomed her sister to some horrid fate
3. The conversation had distracted Fred, and the fallen dragon woman was able to wriggle free.
