Safety is a Relative Concept

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 18380

"How far away?" Astrid wanted to know.

"If we could travel in a straight line, it would be only about a mile. But the indirect route we will have to follow through the tunnels means it will be nearer three."

"So at most an hour's walking. That's not too bad."

"One thing you should realise, Mistress, is that in these caves safety can only be relative. When you asked if I could lead you safely to the armour, I replied 'yes' because I could see no immediate danger on our route when I went along it."

"When you went along it?" a startled Astrid repeated.

"That was the only way to check its safety, Mistress. If you did not notice me flicker just now when I did so, then I must be gaining in speed and proficiency as my experience increases."

"I see. So you're saying it's safe at the moment - or at least it was a minute or so ago when you checked - but that there's no guarantee that it will remain so."

"Yes, Mistress. There are many evil things in these caves, and some of them can move quickly."

"I think it's a risk worth taking. I'd like to preserve my remaining wishes for as long as possible. If we do run into serious trouble, I can always use a wish then."

  1. "Yes, Mistress. And if you have my body's reflexes, then even unarmed you are not without resource."
  2. "Yes, Mistress. And if your life is in imminent peril, I am allowed to fight on your behalf, without your having to use a wish."
  3. Before Astra could answer, they heard the sound of approaching footsteps.
