Fred knew from Uhura's memories that Captain Kirk was a resourceful and
capable man, the kind that Lord Fred would have been pleased to call a
fellow warrior (and one Uhura had entertained fantasies about more than
once, Fred noted wryly). If anyone could offer advice about this situation
- and possibly find a solution to it - it wuold be the Captain. Fred touched the intercom by Uhura's bed. "Lieutenant Uhura to Captain Kirk." "Kirk here. What is it, Uhura?" "Captain, may I speak to you for a few moments on a matter of some urgency?" She hesitated, then added, "Privately?" There was a pause, then: "Meet me in ten minutes in main briefing. Kirk out." Ten minutes later, Fred entered the main briefing room to find Kirk already waiting, with a smile on his face. "Nyota," he said, "Bones just told me the news - congratulations." "Um, thank you, sir," she replied nervously. "I understand that you're likely worried that you'll be asked to leave the ship," Kirk said. "Well, not on my watch. I know that you'll need some leave when it's time for - well, you know - but I have no intention of letting someone as valuable as you slip away!" "You don't?" "Of course not." Kirk paused, then said, "Uhura - Noyota - you know I don't hand out cheap praise, so believe me when I say that you're the best damn comm officer I've ever worked with. And if Command thinks they're going to force you out over this, they've had their heads mired in the sand for too long!" Unexpectedly, Fred found her eyes tearing over. To think, he has this much confidence in me! She thought. "Oh, Captain, I'm sor grateful!" she said, stepping forward and hugging him. As she pulled away, though, she realized that she'd just allowed her own personality to be overwhelmed again. Damn! I have to more careful! "But, to be honest, that wasn't why I asked to see you."
