Frederica thought quickly. It seemed likely that this man had been
responsible for
the deaths of the two women whose skeletons she had discovered. After all,
as far as
she knew the island had no other inhabitants. It therefore seemed that her
own life
might also be in danger. If the man thought that she was a magic user,
perhaps that would
discourage him from trying anything. "I'm the magician," she said.
The man fixed her with an uncomfortably penetrating stare - or perhaps she was just imagining that. "So who was your friend and what happened to him?" he asked. "And what business brought you to this island?"
