There was something wrong here, Princess Frederica thought. It should have
taken
at least a decade, even in this warm and damp climate, for two corpses to
be reduced
to skeletons with no sign of flesh or skin. In that time, the grass hut in
which
the skeletons lay would have been
expected - without any maintenance being carried out on it - to rot away.
The dresses
they wore also showed no sign of the passing of the years, and their
colours were still
as bright as they must have been on the day that the dyes were applied to
the material.
Frederica suspected witchcraft, and naturally that worried her. Either the decay of the bodies had been magically speeded up or - less likely - the decay of the huts and the dresses had been slowed down. But she could not think of a reason why anyone would want to do that. And who could have been responsible, given that the island now seemed to be deserted?
