"She's in a deep trance," Jarlath said, "presumably induced by some sort of enchantment. Perhaps she'll come out of it when she reaches the end of the song - assuming that it has an end. I'm mystified as to how a woman on her own could have come to this place, deep within the dragon's domain and in total darkness. She's not even wearing any shoes, just that long white gown - a nightgown, is it?"

"Maybe the dragon abducted her and enchanted her," Fred suggested. "But in that case why should he set her to sing in the dark in a place where no-one is ever likely to come?"

"Unless he knew that we were coming," Jarlath said. "I'm beginning to feel very uneasy about this."

"But why would he want us to encounter a singer?" Fred asked. "Is her voice supposed to enchant us? Because, if so, it doesn't seem to be working."

At that moment:

  1. The woman reached the end of her song and her eyes opened. "Oh!" she said. "Where am I and who are you?"
  2. The woman reached the end of her song and her eyes opened. "Now you have heard my song through to its end you are in my power," she said.
  3. The woman reached the end of her song and her eyes opened. They seemed to be wholly white!
  4. A deep voice boomed out: "Welcome!" and then the dragon entered the room at its far end.
  5. They heard Astra's voice: "Pssst! Over here!"
