On the Bank

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 17922

Perhaps the fact that the man on the bank could obviously see them was due to his lack of intrinsic magic. He wore a long dark cloak with the collar turned up, so what with that and the mist it was only his voice that confirmed for them that he was male. "Hallo!" he hailed them. "Outlanders, the current rapidly increases from this point onwards, and there are rapids not far downstream. I advise you to abandon the raft at once."

This was unwelcome news for Fred and Jarlath, who did not relish getting their clothes soaked. That was not a consideration for Astra, of course, who said: "Come on!" and dived into the water. Fred and Jarlath looked at one another, grimaced, and then dived in after her.

The distance was short, which was just as well for Fred as his chain mail was heavy, and they all swam to the bank safely. They pulled themselves out of the water and stood dripping, Astra in particular being thankful that it was a fairly warm day.

Jarlath said to the stranger: "Thank you for your warning. What did you mean by by calling us 'Outlanders'? Is it that we do not possess any of the magic of this land? If that is the reason, are you not an Outlander yourself, for I can detect no magic in you?"

"Yes, like you I am an Outlander. My name is Thomas. The Magic Realm is not a safe place for such as we. It is true that its ordinary inhabitants are not even able to detect our presence unless we are unwise enough to draw attention to ourselves, but there are some inhabitants who are far from ordinary. There is only one way out of the Realm, though, and that is where I am headed. The gateway can be found in:

  1. "The City of Ghosts and Shadows."
  2. "The Tower of Broken Glass."
