A soldier rushed up and on seeing the dead body on the floor grabbed Fred before he could get his body to move from the spot.

"Young lady, what has happened here?" he asked roughly.

Fred was unsure how to explain the situation. It was difficult to tell the truth, and even more unlikely that the truth would be believed.
