When Last We Left Our Heroes...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 17622

When last we left Fred, he was cowering behind a large rock in a public park. He continued to cower for some time, then eventually he realized that cowering behind a rock didn't particularly fit his self-image as a heroic knight, and stood up, rather sheepishly. There were still many fearsome metal beasts prowling around outside the limits of this small, grassy area, but at least the terrible wailing sound had stopped.

As Fred was standing there, pondering what to do next, one of the metal monsters slowed, pulled over close to him, and stopped. Fred drew his sword and prepared to do battle, but was somewhat taken aback when a man poked his head out of the creature's side and said, "Hi!"

Fred peered closely at the man and saw that he, too, was dressed in knightly armor, albiet somewhat different than Fred's. There was something about the familiar sight amongst all this strangeness that was both shocking and reassuring at once.

"I assume you're heading over to the SCA event. Need a ride?"

"A ride?" echoed Fred dumbly.

"Sure! Hop on in, and I'll take you!" The side of the creature opened up. There appeared to be some kind of chair or bench inside. Fred remembered the sorceress' assertion that the "beasts" were merely a sort of wagon, and begain to wonder if she might have had a point.

The man was still looking at him expectantly. Fred, still feeling a bit ashamed about the whole cowering-behind-a-rock thing decided that a conspicuous show of bravery was in order, and got in.

The creature moved at frightening speed, and within minutes it had deposited them in front of a building bedecked with a banner reading "Society for Creative Anacronism: Fundraising Event Today." He followed the strange knight inside, where they were immediately surrounded by dozens of people, most of them in clothing that reminded him at least vaguely of home.

Another knight asked him his name, nodded approvingly when he said "Lord Frederigo D'Honaire," and handed him a cup of ale.

He shrugged and drank. It seemed like the only thing to do.

When last we left Astra, she had stumbled into a butcher's shop. She was rather disconcerted at first by the hanging slabs of meat into which she had blundered, taking them for the macabre props of evil witchcraft (mainly because she had witchcraft on the brain at this point), but quickly realized her mistake. Blushing, she pushed her way out of the shop again before the red-faced butcher could begin berating her.

She stood on the street, looking around. More metal beasts, more people in strange clothes, more just plain weirdness. Astra didn't like it. And when Astra didn't like something, she did something about it. The question was... what? She leaned against the side of the building and began to think and plan...

When last we left Betty, she was moping about being dead and morosely contemplating the news that she was doomed to follow Fred and Astra's adventures forever, with no ability to affect the storyline on her own.

"This sucks," she muttered to herself (at least one benefit of being invisible and inaudible was that she could talk to herself and no one would look at her funny). "There's got to be a way for me to interact with reality... or whatever passes for reality these days. This is the Pan-Dimensional Crossroads, right? Right! So all I have to do is wait for some fictional character to show up who can see ghosts. Like in The Sixth Sense, or last week's Farscape episode, or something. Right?"

  1. And then, Fred...
  2. And so, Astra...
  3. At this point, Betty...
  4. At this point, Betty... [Alternate version]
