Fred reviewed the little he knew. The dragon had been killed, and he,
Astra and Velus had
freed the dragon's prisoner Prince Cederik, the rightful king of Allaria
who had been
betrayed to the dragon by his brother, "King" Emry.
The four of them had come to the village of Mudspot and had announced the death of the dragon. Fred's memories of the evening of celebration that had followed were hazy, to say the least, but he didn't think that any of the four of them had been incautious enough - or drunk enough - to let slip Cederik's true identity. Thus, even if Emry had a spy in this remote outpost, it seemed unlikely that the disappearance of Fred's three companions had anything to do with Cederik's claim to the throne. So why had they been taken, and who had they been taken by? He himself had thought he had seen a monkey who became a man, but had convinced himself that he must have been mistaken. But now the innkeeper's reaction made him think that he had not been mistaken after all. It seemed unlikely that a single person could have captured Astra, Cederik and Velus. Was it possible that they had been taken by a band of weremonkeys? Was there even such a thing as a weremonkey? Fred had never heard of them. And what could they possibly want with the captured three? If he hadn't woken up in time, would he have been taken prisoner too? Fred decided to go back to his companions' rooms and search them thoroughly, in the hope of finding some clues.
