The Wilian Way took the four travellers through heavily forested country
at first. According to
Jarvis, he had spent much time trapping in this region. They were still
passing through Stormgarde, but the land's main towns lay well to the east
of the
Wilian Way and they met only the occasional traveller. They saw nothing to
alarm them and,
after four days, they crossed the border into Luthor.
The border was marked by nothing more than a simple sign. The Three Kingdoms were, after all, closely allied, and even Stormgarde saw no need for a border post or patrols. "This is both the least populous and the least wealthy of the Three Kingdoms," Fred told Astra and Thessamar. "Yet it is perhaps the most renowned, for it has long had a great reputation for its prophets, its sages and its mystics. Many pilgrims come here from Allaria - and from many other countries too, for that matter - to become monks in its monasteries or to sit at the feet of its holy men." "You say 'monks'," Thessamer said. "How about nuns? Do any women make the pigrimage to this land?" "And are any of these prophets and mystics women?" Astra wanted to know. Before Fred could reply, Jarvis butted in: "Well, there's Bertha the Blessed." He suppressed a chuckle, for Bertha had become something of a figure of fun to many throughout the Kingdoms because of how unrealistic her teachings were. Seeing the way Astra and Thessamar were looking at him, though, he wisely decided that seeming to take a female religious leader anything other than seriously might be a mistake. He went on: "The Wilian Way will take us past the gates of the nunnery she founded, probably sometime tomorrow. We could stay there tomorrow night, if you'd like to sleep in proper beds for a change. I've heard they are very welcoming towards travellers, though I've never sampled their hospitality myself." In their four days on the road together, this was the first useful thing that Jarvis had said or done, Thessamar reflected. Never had four gold pieces (so far) been more easily earned. But it was no use complaining about that now.
