Pondering Escape

"But... if the only way to escape is to defeat Minestus..." Susan reasoned "...then wouldn't he rather try to avoid a direct battle with us?"

"That's my girl!" the Doctor beamed.

"But why?" Human Fred asked. "Why is it we can only escape by killing him? And how did he know that we're Eternal Champions?"

"Simple enough, really." the Doctor said. "Zodin's castle exists in a pocket dimension that had been maintained by her will alone, and which has now been transferred to that of the Dragon. Were he to leave this place... or to die... this entire palace would vanish. As for how Minestus knew that - well, some villains have a good nose for this sort of thing. Either that... or he just logged on to Extend-A-Story and read the preceding episodes. No way to know yet."

"What would happen to us if this castle vanished?" Demifox Astra asked nervously.

"Simple. We would be returned to wherever we're supposed to be." the Doctor said.

"What if we're not really supposed to be anywhere?" asked Demifox Josh. "Philosophically speaking."

"I'm sure the Multiverse is fully capable of figuring out what to do with us." smiled the Doctor.

"Have faith, everyone!" Human Astra said. "If we just work together, I'm sure we can find a way to accomplish our mission and get back home."

"Well!" Human Fred said. "Then the key to escaping is simply in forcing Minestus to commit to a showdown. But that won't be easy - like most villains, he will much rather hide and try to kill us with devious traps and hordes of monstrous minions."

"I'm sure this castle exists for a reason." Demifox Fred said. "Something is here - something important to Minestus. If we can just find it, he will have no choice but to fight us!"

"Whatever it is that's in this castle..." Demifox Josh said, "...surely has serious ramifications for the entire Multiverse!"

"Likely connected to the current plague of thinies." the Doctor said. "In any case, we won't learn anything standing around here. Is everyone ready to go?"

"Ready." Human Fred and Astra nodded. "Ready!" Susan chirped, and the three demifoxes nodded their agreement.

And so, our motley crew of heroes continued on their adventure. There were four exits from the room, and the team went...

1. Through the right double-door, to a massive room designed like a giant chess set. Nine white pieces... and sixteen black, guarding the opposite door?
2. Through the left double-door, to a massive room with red, green and blue floor tiles. And spikes all over the ceiling?
3. Up a massive staircase, and to a dark foreboding forest filled with unfriendly glowing eyes in the shadows.
4. Down the massive staircase, and to a rickety rope-bridge swaying over an abyss.
