Captain's Briefing

A little later Stacy was sitting at a table (fortunately the aliens were similar enough in their size and general shape that their furniture could be used by humans), together with the Captain, Paula and Dr Burke.

"Now," the alien told them, "the war has been in progress for some weeks. The alliance of worlds that we have put together has control of space around our enemy's planet, but it has not yet been possible to press home our attacks against the surface. So far their defences have been too strong...

1. "To be frank, we seem to have reached a position of stalemate."
2. "But we have an idea for breaking the deadlock. We are going to..."
3. "But we have a plan. Unfortunately it's top secret, so I can't tell you about it."
4. Stacy interrupted him: "But have you any news of my brother?"
