"I think you are insane," Ringroot angrily told Arkas. "There is no way I
will send
any of my people on such a foolhardy mission as you propose. The only way
to prove that
Moreau has the Crystallic - which in any case she doesn't - would be to
get someone into her lair.
Even if she isn't at home, the place is sure to be heavily protected by
magic." "To send someone
into her lair would indeed be crazy. I intend something a little more
subtle
than that..."
As Synizn made his preparations to relocate to somewhere where he would be almost impossible to find, he considered what best to do with Fred and Astra. He did not want to take them with him; they would be an encumbrance, especially once they realised that he had no intention of changing them back. On the other hand, if he let them go free in Walants then they would be able to confirm that he had the Crystallic. Even though he hoped to be untraceable, that would represent an unnecessary risk. He could leave them where they were, trapped behind his magic door, where they would eventually starve to death, but though he was a bitter and sarcastic man he was not normally a cruel one. Besides, there was still an outside chance that some mage might find his residence and release them. The final option was to transport them to some out of the way spot a long way from Walants. If they were ever heard from again, by that time his trail would long since have gone cold.
Onyx's group were making good progress on their journey, but a demifox travels far slower than a dragon. Landru flew north over first Ryngaerd and then Malboncton on his way to the Goth Mountains. A dragon in flight is a magnificent sight, but the people of the villages over which he passed were too terrified to appreciate the beauty of it. But Landru was not interested in them.
