The Never Ending Quest - Episode 16914

By supporting himself with one hand against the wall of the passage, Fred was able to stand. He feared that he might fall forward at any moment, though, for his centre of gravity was well forward relative to the position of his feet - or rather paws. Seeing his difficulty, Synizn gestured, and a stout staff appeared in his hand. He gave it to Fred, saying: "Here, support yourself with this. Now, I believe we were on our way to see your friend."

Without saying anything further, Synizn - the Crystallic grasped securely in his hand - led Fred to the end of the passage, where a stout oak door faced them. No handle or keyhole was visible, but Synizn muttered something incomprehensible to Fred and gestured with his free hand, and the door swung inwards.

"Dammit! You might at least knock," Astra grumbled, as she got up from the chair in which she had been sitting. Then she saw Fred, who had at first been hidden from her sight by the interposed body of Synizn. "Fred! What have you done to him?" she asked, shock and indignation in her voice. "I have done nothing to him," Synizn responded. "He did that to himself. He thought he would try to use the Crystallic before I could take it, even though I had warned him against it."

Fred was still too stunned by what had happened to him to take an active part in the conversation for the moment, so it was Astra who asked the mage: "Can you undo it?" "Oh, there's no doubt that I can. But I think that what you meant to ask was: 'Will you undo it?' That is less certain, for it is far from the top of my list of priorities. At the top of that list, is to restore my own true form. Second is to use the Crystallic to defeat Moreau. What is to happen to the two of you comes a poor third. After all, your profession is that of dragonslayer, so you can hardly expect me to be overly concerned about your welfare."

"But you will be a dragonslayer yourself if you succeed in killing Moreau," Fred objected, having found his voice again. "Besides, the dragon that we set out to kill was evil. Even Malachi, another dragon and your friend, said so. And in the event, it was she who killed Minestus, not us." "But supposing you had happened to come across Malachi prior to your transformation. Would you have stopped to ask her whether she was the dragon that you sought? Would you have even cared? Wouldn't you have simply assumed that all dragons were evil and tried to kill her anyway?"

  1. "Well, maybe," Fred grudgingly conceded.
