Fred felt like a noose was tightening around his neck. These last weeks
had been one nightmare after another; he had been the pawn of dragons, he
had been the prisoner of freaks, and he now held no more freedom than if
he was in a stockade. There was no guarantee that this mage was telling
the truth, no guarantee that he was leading him to see Astra, no guarantee
that he would aid them at all. There was only one last opportunity. Fred
clutched the Crystallic with extra force and, within his mind, bade the
gem to do his will; he bent every thought to his becoming human. Nothing
happened.
Fred theorized that the crystal needed a physical impulse, some act for it to unfold its power. The mages in his own home used words, indeed, he had been taught simple incantations before his leaving Allaria. Though this was far from simple Fred made the effort. He paused, allowing Synizn to gain some distance on him, just in case he needed to run. Then Fred attempted to use the Crystallic: "magis sumptus, whitis handus..." Synizn stopped and turned. "...human sapien, curan d'honarien" "NO!" yelled Synizn even as Fred fell to the floor. His whole frame convulsed, his skin tightened, his bones trembled; his back seized, his arms stretched, his legs realigned. "Aaaaaaaiiiigh!" screamed Fred, and his screams lasted for many unmerciful minutes. When the pain dissipated Fred raised his head to see a fuming form above him. "Are you happy now?!!?" growled Synizn. "You'll wish I had taken this from you!" he said as he held the Crystallic. Fred attempted to stand but found the act difficult. He lifted his hands in order to steady himself and was shocked at what he saw: his skin color was normal! Not only that, but Synizn appeared less tall than before which could only mean that Fred was taller than the mere three feet of his neo-fox curse! He quickly felt his head - his ears were normal too! But he could still feel the swish of his tail and his legs hurt like hell. Fred looked down and all his hopes of normalcy were dashed; his legs were far from normal, in fact, they were disjointed! His thighs led to his knees at an unnatural angle, thrusting out from his torso; his lower legs retreated back under his body and ended, not in feet, but in paws. "I've got dog legs!!!" shrieked Fred. "Fox legs actually, you idiot," mumbled Synizn. "What the hell am I?" "You? You're a freak, a monster - and you did it to yourself." Then the mage began to laugh, and a more pitiless sound Fred had never heard.
