As Betty-1 drove towards White Sands, the Doctor and his three companions
discussed the
situation, hoping against hope that someone would come up with a brilliant
plan.
"How are we going to get the MC8 out of the base, Doctor?" Melissa
asked. "Your
UNIT pass may get us in, but they are hardly just going to allow you to
walk out
with the stuff." "I don't think it will be a case of 'us'," the Doctor
said. "I suspect
that I will be the only one they'll allow inside the secure compound
where, according
to the Rani's map, the stuff is kept. Since you don't have passes,
I fear that you'll have to stay in the part of the base that is open to
the public.
According to the map, it seems to amount to a small town, so there should
be something
to occupy your time."
The Doctor's prediction proved accurate. Betty-1, Melissa and Stacy waited nervously in the public area, not far from where they had left the car, whilst the Doctor walked the short distance over to the guardhouse of the compound where the MC8 was kept - assuming that the Rani's map could be relied on. He disappeared from their view. An hour or so later:
