"Welcome," says the man. "I suppose I have some explanations to
give..." "My name is Farlane Silverhand. I am a sorceror and a scientist, although I was not always either. My intelligence and abilities were increased by the beings who recruited me to bring you here. "You see, there has been a war going on, ever since the beginning of the first universe. There is more than one universe, you see. The Eternal Champions among you may very well be familiar with the idea of alternate analog universes, but there are other universes as well, containing their own analog universes--in effect, alternate multiverses." And he explained the nature of analog universes and multiversal physics to the extent that those here would understand it. [I'm not going to repeat the explanation, read episode 16084.] "As I have said," he continued, "the universes are, in effect, alive. The Slipgate systems, which the Champions may know as an Atlantean device to travel through worlds, play a major role in the physiology of the universes. It would be almost impossible to explain just how, but they are slightly analogous to a human's blood vessels. "Perhaps you're wondering why I've brought you here. The answer is that there's a War going on, and you're needed to win it. This War has been going on since the time of the very first universe. You see, once there was a civilization of immense power that learned the secrets of the universe. They tapped into the universe's "blood vessels" and made the Slipgate system. They brought the Crystallics under their control, reshaping them into magical artifacts. They used the energy of the living Universe to increase their power. "The Universe didn't care for them, as one would assume. They were like parasites, burrowing into her system. As time went on, they split into two factions. One wanted to destroy the universe and reshape it under their control. The other sought to undo the damage and forge a symbiotic existance with the Universe. The second faction was far smaller than the first. At first, they existed together in an uneasy peace. But the dicatatorial ruler of the first faction sought to supress the second entirely, and war broke out. "When the Universe died, both factions found a way to preserve their existance into the newly formed Universes. They fought each other for millennia upon millennia. The first faction sought to destroy every Universe and to rebuild them as a single Universe under the control of their leader. The second sought to stop them and preserve the order of the Universes. The second was able to impede the progress of the first, but no more. Their forces were too weak. The first also had millions and billions of minions in every universe, who were linked to them through Crystallics. The second had allies among the lesser species, but only a few. There are uncountably many Universes, but it would be only a matter of time before the first faction destroyed them all. Already, they have destroyed many and absorbed their energies, including that of the Eternal Champions here. The war seemed hopeless to win. "But then, there was hope. A member of the second entered the Destiny Matrix, an extrauniversal construct which partially shapes the fate of the various Universes. He discovered there a way to defeat the first faction. He would set up someone to gather together the greatest heroes within a certain range of Universes. That someone is me, and you are the Chosen, the greatest heroes in your respective Universes, destined to save the Universes and defeat the first faction forever. "However, a problem has come up. Someone has interfered with the system that was supposed to gather you here. A few who were supposed to be gathered were not, and a few who were not, were. The other Chosen were dropped in a different sector of this Universe- -for Universes often have different sectors of analog universes, guarded by different groups. This particular sector partially mirrors the home sector of the Champions. To bring them here and deal with the interference will be your first mission." "Wait," said an Astra, who Scott recognized as one of those that he'd first seen. "Do we get a choice." "I'm afraid not," said Silverhand. "Not yet. There will come a time when you will have a choice as to wether you will continue fighting this War. But that time is very far off. I will give you a day to recover from what you have been through. Tomorrow, we will embark on our mission. You will find bedrooms which you will be directed to as you were to this console room. There is one for each of you.
