Of the three passages Fred saw, two shined with eldritch
light, one red and one blue. Both inclined upward. The other
inclined downward for a while and then steadied out. This seemed
to be full of water up to about Fred's waist. He didn't like the idea of
going into the water-filled passage, but liked the strange lights even
less. Better to deal with a danger he knew how to handle. Besides,
he was searching for the dragon, and it seemed more likely
that the dragon would be in the more underground part of the cave. If
the water got too deep, he could always turn back.
Fred cautiously walked into the watery passage. The water proved to be uncomfortably cold, but not so cold as to be harmful to one's health. As they walked deeper into the water, Belboz muttered a few spells and began to hover over the water. Fred did not trust wizards at all, especially not a self-professed necromancer, but knew that Belboz's help might be useful--he had heard rumors of the Dragon's sorcerous might. He couldn't help but wonder the meaning behind Belboz's strange demand for the Dragon's eyes, though. [77] Fred slogged through the cold water for about an hour. He envied Belboz, but didn't want to take the risk of being enchanted with whatever levitation spell he was using. Finally, however, the passage opened up into a vast cave containing an underground lake. The water now had a faint phosphorescent glow to it. He could dimly see the other edge many miles away. He didn't know if he could swim to it and decided that it would probably not be a good idea Before he could tell Belboz this, however, he saw that something jutted out of the center of the lake.
