Lord Frederigo does not believe the girl. He has served in the courts of
the king for many years and never met this young lady. He presses his
sword up against her throat. "Dare ye blaspheme the king?! Who art thou, and whence come ye?" The girl is taken back by this language and sputters, "Indeed, I am the daughter of the king. My name is Diana. Forgive me, though, for the queen is not my mother, but the wife of the Edward, the King's counsellor." This story relieved Lord Fred somewhat. He knew that the king had a wandering youth, and that counsellor Edward had a fine wife, though he was home little. Lord Fred inquired further. "Privy me, then. Whence come ye? You say from the dragon?" "I do," replied Diana. "I escaped his minions and have hidden in these tunnels for many days. I am hungry and wet and cold. Have you anything I might eat?"
