Too Many Champions

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 16028

"That," said Fred 91X, "is the strangest interdimensional transport I've ever experienced."

"Speak for yourself," said Fred's true love and fellow Eternal Champion, Astra 91Q, as she fell through the ceiling.

Three more people materialized in the Romulan concert room, through a relatively normal burst of light. The first was an adolescent male with brown hair and intense green eyes. He referred to himself as Gareth, because his real name was unpronouncable. He came from a rather odd family, to say the least. His father was a rogue Time Lord known as the Doctor. His mother was an artificial intelligence known as Inquierer. He had been concieved when they had both been turned into baseline humans by an evil entity from beyond the multiverse, who had tried to absorb the energies of all the Eternal Champions.

The second was an attractive blonde girl of about the same (apparent) age as Gareth. She was Belinda 3, the sister of Astra (although not the Astra in this room--being an Eternal Champion could be confusing at times)

The third arrival was a man who looked almost exactly like Fred 91X, except he seemed to be ten or so years older. In reality, he was several centuries older. His name was Fred 2, and he was one of the first people ever to become Eternal Champions. He had been defending the Multiverse for several years now, and to tell the truth, he was getting a little tired of it. It wasn't just him, all the early Champions had begun to feel ennui. Perhaps humans just weren't meant to live this long.

"Okay," said Fred 2. "Any thoughts, Gareth? You're the science expert here." Gareth had some considerable skill with scientific matters, not surprising considering who his parents were.

"I have a theory," said Gareth. "You probably won't like it, though, and the Departments will like it even less. In the beginning, you see, there were only a few Eternal Champions. These were the Freds and Astras and others who were transported here in the Accident, and the others who were transported to Terra Prime afterwards.

"But as time went on, more and more people were transported here, most of whom are counterparts of Fred and Astra. And most of them were recruited as Eternal Champions. Now, several centuries after the recruitment of the first Champions, there are over three hundred Eternal Champions, most of whom are Freds and Astras. Perhaps these reality warps are being caused by too many counterparts of one individual in close proximity. Terra Prime's universe is beginning to collapse in on itself. It's turning into a multiversal black hole, and the nearby universes are being sucked in!"

"I wonder why that is," said Belinda 3. "Why there are so many people being drawn to Terra Prime, and why they're almost all the same people?"

Fred 2 frowned. "To tell the truth, I've never considered that before. And I've lived for two hundred years. I may have thought about it idly, but I never really thought about it."

  1. "So, what do we do now?" asked Fred 91X.
