Astra took some deep breaths in an attempt to calm herself, and then - now
that there was enough light to do so - examined
her injuries. Fortunately most of the blood that caked her seemed to have
been shed
by others. In fact she only seemed to have a few minor and rapidly healing
cuts.
She shook her head in bewilderment. She was sure that she had been far
more badly hurt
than that. It was almost as if she had been healed by some supernatural
agency.
She tried to remember precisely what had happened last night, but it was all so confused. They had clearly been betrayed by Geoff and Beatrice, and then there had been that brief but bloody battle. But what had been the source of that caterwauling and the strange blue light? It hadn't been at the behest of the attackers, she was almost sure, since they had seemed afraid of it. She felt bad about having let Andrea be taken - and she hoped she had been taken rather than killed. Having effectively appointed herself as the girl's protector - and, by the gods, she certainly did need protecting - she had been unable to do so, though admittedly against overwhelming odds. I should never have have accepted the farmer's hospitality, she thought. Finding a stream, she washed as much of the blood from herself and her clothes as she could, meanwhile trying to decide what she should do next. She could return to Croix Keep, where Andrea would presumably have been taken, and attempt to rescue her. Realistically, she knew that her chance of success would be almost zero. Or she could stick to the original plan, and head for Caemlyn, in the hope that the King would do what she herself could not. Or she could put her own interests first, and make another attempt to find either Mother Shipton or some other magic user of sufficient knowledge to tell her what enchantment the Dragon had placed her under and, she hoped, cure her.
