The two groups joined in battle. That suggested that Zular had not
arranged for the bandits, unless some very good play-acting was going on.
It still bothered Rowena D'Honaire, though. If they had their full retinue
of soldiers, as they had when her father still lived, they would not have
to suffer the indignity of House Mollari fighting their battles for them.
Doubtless Zular would gloat on this latest sortie when news reached
Caemlyn. The bandits were fighting valiantly, but were quite obviously outclassed and underequipped compared to the men under the Mollari standard. Knowing Zular, it was still entirely possible he had hired them by proxy, and they simply did not know who their true employer was. Also knowing Zular, he was likely having them slaughtered both to avoid payment and remove any evidence that might implicate him. Rowena turned to see her falconer riding up to her again. "Milady, we must flee now. There is now a gap in the bandit's flank, just where we were hoping to go, in the east. While the Mollari soldiery can doubtless slaughter them to a man, I am assuming you do not wish to spend time under the Duke Regent's hospitality." "You would be correct in assuming that." "Then we ride now!"
