Rowena's emotions on seeing the Mollari riders were very mixed. She was of
course glad that rescue seemed imminent.
On the other hand, to require rescuing within the borders of her own duchy
would mean
a big loss of face. She knew it would be whispered at court that the
incident
showed that she was not competent
to run Suffex and, in the absence of her brother, that
Duke Zular should be given the responsibility. She knew that her youth and
being a woman had
meant that she had very nearly not been given the chance to run Suffex
when Frederigo had left.
Now those factors would be brought up again.
It seemed a remarkable coincidence that men from House Mollari, Zular's house, should turn up in Suffex just when and where they were needed to rescue her. Could they have been trailing her all the way from Caemlyn? Was it even possible that Zular had arranged for the bandits? She wouldn't put it past him. If that was the case, then proving it would be very difficult, of course. Zular might be a rat, but he was a very competent rat, and his plans would have been carefully laid. Rowena feared that she was going to be faced with the choice between returning to Caemlyn and arguing her case for the continued D'Honaire control of the Duchy of Suffex, and continuing with her mission to find Jarlath. Would she rather lose her birthright or her brother? Of course, whichever choice she made, she thought ruefully, the most likely outcome was that she would lose both.
