Though painful, luckily none of Fred's or Velus's injuries seemed to be
life-threatening or
disabling. Fred treated them as well as he could with the salves from his
pack. (Unfortunately the bandages the pack had once contained had been used
to provide makeshift clothes for Astra. [41])
As he applied the salves, Fred thought about what had happened. If, as he suspected, the panther had been a were-creature, then its having been in its bestial form must imply that the moon was now full. That would mean that in three days time, when he feared that the sigils might appear on himself or on Velus, the moon would be waning. Therefore they would not be at risk of changing for nearly a month, when it would next be full. That was of little comfort, though, for the chance of their finding a cure seemed remote. They had been wandering the caverns for some days now, without finding either the dragon or the way out, so there seemed little hope that they could find a friendly mage who might be able to make them well. The only consolation was that, down here in the caves, the risk they would pose to others would be minimised. There was one other possibility, Fred thought. In the form of a dog, Velus might be immune to the "infection". After all, it had been intended to work on human bodies, not on canine ones.
