Looking around, Fred and Astra realised that Zantar seemed to have
mysteriously
disappeared, so there would be no more help for them from that quarter. "It
doumds as though there are too many for us
to hold them off for long," Fred said.
"Especially with only one sword between the pair of us. We'd better run
for it." Fitting the
action to the words, Astra ran off into the trees on the opposite side of
the clearing
to that from which the ape-men approached. Fred followed close behind
though, weighed
down by his chain mail, he struggled to keep up with the unencumbered
Astra.
Astra headed in the direction where the trees seemed to be thickest, hoping to throw the ape-men off the track should they attempt to pursue them. After five minutes or so, she could no longer hear their cries, and judged that it was safe to stop running. She turned to face Fred. "I think - puff - we've thrown them off the - puff - scent," she said. Fred nodded, trying not to stare too obviously at Astra's heaving chest. Still fantasising about winning her hand, he hoped she would not think he was too young for her. Meanwhile Astra was thinking: It's strange, but Fred looks a good five years younger than I remember. I'd thought he was about my own age, but now he seems to hardly need to shave. "How did you come to be tied to that tree?" Fred asked. "It's strange, but I can't remember," the princess replied. "The last thing I recall is going to sleep by the side of a lake. When I woke up, I found myself where you discovered me." "I'm none to sure how I came here either," Fred said.
