Edgar knew better than to continue to argue with his mistress. Allaria was
a land
where servants were expected to know their place. Besides, he knew that he
would have been
wasting his time. Once Rowena's mind was made up, she rarely changed it.
And he had
to admit that her
decisions usually turned out well, for - though she could be stubborn, and
was occasionally
impulsive - she had a good head on her shoulders.
He was still worried, though. Their party - four male retainers, Rowena and her two lady's maids - would be no match for a band of eleven men, should those men mean them ill and succeed in intercepting them. It was always possible, of course, that the strangers had other fish to fry and would take no interest in them at all, but it was prudent to assume the worst, especially given their lack of identifying colours. The captured daughter of a ducal house would fetch a large ransom.
Meanwhile, the four adventurers had found a village not far south of the Calamari where they could exchange their horses for mules, clothing and supplies. Then they rode on, necessarily at a slower pace now. They had also acquired a map of the Calamari - hopefully an accurate one. However Vincent's tower was not marked on it. One of the wilder rumours that Astra had heard in the last few days claimed that it was impossible to mark the tower accurately on a map, because it did not stay in one place. However, given the size of the Calamari, the odds seemed thousands to one against their ever coming within sight of the place - unless some arcane force should be at work. Next day, they entered the desert. A mile of so behind them, a Sdano gypsy followed their trail. The lack of cover in the desert meant that he could not tail them too closely, if he was to remain unobserved.
