"I think I'd better renew my magical wards, just in case," Natalia
said. "I shan't
be long. In the meantime, help yourself to whatever you want from the
fridge."
Anastasia had to restrict herself to items that were already unwrapped or that could be opened with paws without making a mess. What she really wanted was a bloody raw steak, but there was nothing like that to be had. In the end she chose a large slab of cheese. It did not seem to have much flavour - partly because her sense of taste was different when in this form, and partly because (like most modern American cheese) it was much blander than the cheeses she had been used to - but it took the edge off her hunger. It was a long time since she had eaten. [13366] After fifteen minutes or so, Natalia returned. "The rain had washed away some of the symbols I'd chalked up," she said. "I've redrawn them all, with some difficulty - have you ever tried to hold a piece of chalk in a paw? I've also chalked them on the frame of the window that you effectively converted into a door. I just hope it isn't a case of shutting the stable door after the horse has bolted. Whatever the case, I don't think we have any real alternative to staying here tonight. This form might be great when out in the wild, but it's a liability in New York. In the morning we can consider our options. Now, have you left any food for me?" After they had eaten, they satisfied another sort of hunger.
