Hasty Charms

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 15324

"Your place isn't far, though. Can't we get back there before they have a chance to pick up the trail?"

"No. I think we'd just lead them back there. Unless... I need to find some magic trick for throwing them off the scent."

Natalia stroked her cheek with a claw, thinking, and then turned to Anastasia.

"Do you have a large beeswax candle?"

Anastasia's pointed ears twitched a little as she looked confused.

"I'm not sure. Let me check"

The dark-furred werewolf rifled through drawers, a snarl of frustration escaping from her lips as she searched. Shortly, she raised a hairy fist clutching a chubby pale object.

"Will this be big enough?"

Natalia looked at the candle proffered her in an appraising manner, and took it in her gnarled hand, walking in a loping gait towards the table in front of the television. Setting the candle down, she carved various symbols into it with a claw, and then achingly carefully pricked her own finger, holding it over the candle as just a few drops of her ichor dripped onto it before the wound healed itself.

"Bleed over the candle, Ana. Do it quickly before they get more of a chance to act"

Anastasia looked quizzically at Natalia, and then did likewise. Natalia picked up a matchbook off the floor and lit the candle.

"We've got to move now. They'll think we're still here until that blood burns off the candle, which won't be very long at all. It should be enough to get us to the apartment, though..."

Professor Henry Stanton and Dr. Johannes Myer stand in the carnage left behind in a low-rent apartment. Broken glass, tangled shedded tufts of hair, slumped still-cooling bodies and much blood are strewn about.

"I told you they never had a chance against her with this little preparation," Myer says.

"Keep your voice down, Doctor. They're still here somewhere."

"No," Johannes says, stepping into the living room, "No they're not, Professor."

Myer gestures, and Stanton regards a stout candle sizzling and smouldering against the dwindling blood dripped on it.

"Damn! So the witch still has command of her powers while a therianthrope? Amazing, though disconcerting that we've lost them again."

"Lost them? hardly. Stanton, pull out your knife and scrape the last of that blood before it burns away..."

It had felt so exhilarating, running through the rain, across rooftops and in alleys. Natalia felt the blood pounding in her chest, and watching Anastasia as they went, she could tell that the dark-furred beast woman was thrilling to have a measure of freedom again as well. They reached the loft before long, stepping back in through the broken window.

They instinctually shook the water from their frames, and Natalia made a face.

"Gads. Smelling like wet dog is going to take some getting used to."

"You'll get to like it," Anastasia said, her nose twitching as she took a deep breath of the pungent aroma.

"I'll take your word for it. God, I need to eat something."

Natalia loped over to the fridge, and had begun to search its contents when inexplicably, a deep shiver ran through her, causing her hackles to rise. She looked over at Anastasia to notice that her fur was standing on end in alarm, too.

"You felt that?"

"Yes, but what does it mean?"

  1. "It was probably just a breeze"
  2. "I'm not sure, but it can't be good"
  3. "Someone just used magic on us..."
