Stacy, deciding to try and brazen it out, handed the woman her visitor's pass.

"This is expired," Amanda said, looking as if Stacy had just handed her a long-dead animal, rather than a piece of laminated plastic.

"Look, do we have to go through all this again?" Stacy said, trying to keep her voice under control. "Dave Nielson vouched for me, remember?" She ignored the small ironic snort from Helen.

"I'm sorry, ma'am," said the woman in a tone that was absolutely anything but apologetic. "No pass, no entrance. No exceptions." She crossed her arms in front of her, the perfect image of an immovable object.

1. Stacy and Helen admitted defeat and retreated to come up with a Plan B.
2. Stacy continued attempting to do her best impression of an irresistable force.
