The Town Meeting...

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 15394

"Hmmm," you say in mild interest, curious as to exactly why there are some very old fashioned analog controls in this sleek spaceship, when everything else is high tech "touch pad."

"You like?" Human Tom Paris smiles, proud of his little addition to his child. "I got tired of the ordinary controls that do nothing more than 'beep' when you push them!"

"I still fail to see why you insisted in having them installed," Human Tuvok chimes in from behind.

"It's a nostalgia thing," you say, turning halfway back to answer Voyager's Vulcan Head of Security. "And not only that, it's his sled...so I guess he's allowed a few quirk. Even if...it's not logical."

You turn back, not bothering to see how Tuvok reacts.

"That's pretty much the reason," Tom says, glancing up from he's seat in speculation. "I always had a love of early 20th century America...and B movies."

"I wish I that I could have used the holodeck to play one of the holo-novels I have set up..." you hear him mutter as he makes an adjustment on the controls.

"And he was good enough to point out - though I should have caught it - that the Nantucket power grid runs on 60 hertz electricity and not 60 megahertz electricity," Scott puts in .

"Yeah, making a mistake like that in trying to impress the locals would kinda ruin the fun," you say ruefully.

Later, having landed the Delta flyer in a secluded area on the island of Nantucket, and beaming into an abandoned house so as to better enter the town unobserved...

The humans from the Voyager have made their way into the Auditorium that the Town Meeting is being held this day...and listen in consternation as to just WHAT is being discussed therein!

Names have already been matched with faces, and now you and the Star Fleeters just shake your head silently as you watch this circus unfold before you as you watch from the background!

"I say the last thing we need is foreign entanglements!" Sam Macy, head of construction in Providence base, said.

Janeway could see that the older, balding blond man up on the podium was mentally sighing at this latest round with this man. The captain somehow got an impression that this Macy fellow was a nice fellow and all that, but had opinions that couldn't be changed with phasor fire and photon torpedoes!

A murmur of agreement breaks out here and there before Macy continues.

"We're just getting things going right," the man went on, flushing as eyes turned to him...

Frank had remembered the gist of how this Town Meeting was going to go, and Janeway was beginning to see that...Frank was right.

This whole thing revolved around whether or not Nantucket should help the more peaceful people of England, the Earth Folk, in their struggle with an invasion of barbarians called the Iraiina. The Iraiina were reputed to be on a campaign of assimilation of the Earth Folk, and were not above shedding blood in doing it.

The hell of it was, according to Frank, is that just a few months earlier, the Nantucketers had been desperately in need of food and other things, and had been forced to TRADE with the Iraiina (it was either do it...or starve).

Apparently, now that their backs weren't against the wall, but still in need of trade to be able to support themselves at a decent level of living (not wanting to isolate themselves and eventually have their descendants become illiterate potato farmers)...

Janeway wanted no part of this, but she could see...that the Prime Directive is going to be violated no matter WHAT she does!

The Voyager's wrecked carcass wasn't going anywhere, and she loathed the idea of her crew (which she shared with her furry "sister") starving...

Besides, she'd rather interrupt this before the one known as Pamela Lisketter began to speak again. The woman seemed to be oblivious to the reality of where Nantucket was, and kept insisting that they should isolate themselves and "lead a spiritual life." She heard you mutter something under his breath about Lisketter being a "holdover hippie."

Actually, you have nothing against the philosophy expoused by those from the sixties... those who called themselves hippies. It's just that sometimes...

Anyway whatever a hippie was, thinks Janeway. I'm tired of listening to her!

"Frank, whenever you think you could..." Janeway nudges you.
