"If you follow the direction given by the blood compass, you should track
down the so-called Marquis
without any difficulty," Splitgrave told Fred and Astra. "When you find
him, point out
that when I die he will get his soul back, which should be more than
enough incentive
for him to aid you. Now, farewell. I'd say I wished you godspeed, but that
wouldn't really
be appropriate coming from me."
As they left Splitgrave's cave, Fred thought that for just a moment he could see the red light from the ruby set - presumably permanently - in Astra's navel, somehow visible through the armour that she wore. "Forgive me for asking," he said, "but is your armour real or is it an illusion?" "It's only an illusion, but if one is going on a quest I feel one should look the part, and it makes me feel much better. But if I should forget about maintaining the illusion, as I did just now, then it will waver and ultimately vanish. "I don't think I need the protection of real armour, in spite of Splitgrave's warning. After all, you swung your sword right through me back at the vault, without any ill effect. Though I lost the ability to fulfil wishes when I ceased to be tied to the lamp, I don't think it affected my power over my own body. I might be wrong, though; there is much I still have to learn about being a djinn."
