Thick As Thieves

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 14933

"The Marquis?" asked Splitgrave, tapping his osseous claws on the rock wall. "Certainly you could use all the help you can get, but that diminutive, overbearing wretch of a thief, who sold his soul but a decade ago, for leadership of the Guild...wait. My mistake," the lich said, realization seeming to dawn on the ancient lich, "this may actually be a wise choice indeed. If the Marquis still breathes, then he may retain control of the Guild of Thieves of the city of Skater, my onetime home..."

"So?" interjected Fred.

"So," countered Splitgrave, "the Guild, I must admit, has grown from the smoky dens, roving packs of pickpockets and loose fraternities of housebreakers of my youth, during my life. It is a powerful, wise body, with the possible exception of its possibly still-incumbent head, the Marquis, whom I regret to say rose to power with my aid. I had not paid much attention to the Guild for centuries before the Marquis sought me out, and I admit I have not since. But I surmise that if New Babylon is anywhere in the Southern Caves, should anyone at all know how to locate it, the Guild would be it.

"So you may do the honors and activate the blood compass, D'Honaire."

"I- yes," said Fred, and complied. Splitgrave and Astra looked on as Fred began. The blood compass, the Duke's signature having since vanished with the activation of the charm, ceased glowing as Fred opened its lid. He placed the blotted (or clotted?) and completely illegible signature of this thief, this 'Marquis', into the compass and closed it, a little apprehensively. He averted his eyes, and again there was the brief, blinding flash, and the steady glow. It pointed due north. Fred looked uncertainly to Splitgrave.

Splitgrave took no notice. "So that little brigand still breathes," he said to himself. "I must refute any suggestion that he could have possibly successfully reproduced...such a notion would not allow me to rest easy when I am at last finally dead." He lets out a throat-rattling sigh. "I suppose I should be pleased that this has been so effective, and yet I must confess being somewhat disappointed. But time marches on, and we are falling behind. The closest settlement to the north is Skater, a vile, festeringly corrupt burgh with but a few honest workers, which the Marquis does not often leave. Mercenaries, smugglers, assassins, and of course the Guild of Thieves, a veritable cornucopia of unsavory individuals, swarm about the city. I'm sure you two will fit right in."

  1. At last, Fred and Astra leave.
  2. Further questions...
