In The Chamber

The Never Ending Quest - Episode 14796

The wraith shrank back and retreated a few yards down the corridor, its baleful red eyes remaining on Fred. Fred gripped the crucifix more tightly. He would have to keep it around his neck to guarantee he would not lose it. The small silver cross was his only means of protection. His mundane blade not withstanding, Fred had no means of dispatching this incorporeal entity. He had not come prepared for battle with insubstantial undead. He mentally cursed Splitgrave, and kept his blade in hand anyway.

The wraith was keeping its distance now. Fred ignored it, and turned to continue down the hall. It made no sound, but he could feel its hideous presence, tangibly evil, lurking behind him. The glowing orb had grown larger, closer. Fred could make out shadows moving across its light.

The oppressive air generated by the wraith seemed to intensify as Fred came closer to the orb and its dancing shadows. The shadows were now distinguishable as humanoid. Others of which Splitgrave had failed to inform him. At first Fred, had presumed they were practicing some strange rite, but it was visible even to him that there was no significant pattern to their motions. They hammered and flailed at the orb, though their blows seemed to have no effect, passing right through, producing no sound. More wraiths, Fred groaned inwardly, tiptoeing into the chamber.

The chamber was wide and round, huge columns supporting the high ceiling. A chandelier made of several skeletons chained together gave off a sickly flickering green light, suspended beneath a stained glass dome. Wrought iron formed...something...in the dome. Fred thought he saw something moving behind the glass, and abruptly turned away.

A chilly gust passed over Fred?s head, and the wraith sailed past above him. He tried vainly to catch it with his sword. It landed amongst its fellows, who all turned abruptly to face Fred. They were of various sizes, some wearing what appeared to be spectral armor, some armed with ghostly weaponry.

Fred held up his crucifix, hoping to keep them at bay. He sheathed his sword, knowing it to be useless, and pulled Splitgrave's hammer from his belt. He advanced on the orb, hammer and crucifix held aloft.

  1. Fred smashes the orb.
  2. The hammer fails to smash the orb.
