To the best of Fred's recollection, Splitgrave had told him that there was
nothing
to fear in this inner sanctum of the vault. Had Splitgrave overlooked
something, or
had he deliberately misled him? It hadn't occurred to Fred before now to
wonder why Splitgrave
hadn't asked him to get Astra to transport himself (Splitgrave) rather
than Fred. If
this area was more dangerous than Splitgrave had let on, might that
explain it?
Fred was none too sure whether his sword would be any use against a wraith, but he held it in front of him anyway. He wished that Astra was with him. Even if she had been, he wouldn't be able to use his third and final wish, or she would vanish to await her next master [6669 - option 2], but at least she would have provided him with some welcome moral support. In case the sword proved ineffective, Fred also tried the only other thing that he could think of. He hunted inside his jerkin for the small crucifix that his mother had given him and which hung around his neck. (Had he remembered it a little earlier, he might have tried it on first meeting Splitgrave.)
