Rebecca decided that the chances of finding any answers to
her questions from prowling round the palace in the middle of the night
were
slim. No-one would be about but the guards, and she doubted that they
would dare
to be very forthcoming.
She also bore in mind the threat to her family that Samuel had made. Even though she couldn't remember them, she didn't want them to suffer for her actions. It did occur to her that, if she was related to King Hengist - whoever he might be - then her family must be as well. Would Samuel dare to harm them, if they were related to a king, or was he just bluffing? She had no way of knowing, she realised, and she didn't want to risk finding out the hard way. The final factor dissuading her from a second attempt to explore was a more mundane one. There was just enough light for her to see that, whether by accident or design, Samuel had gone to sleep with one arm lying on top of the sheet, and she doubted that she could extract the sheet without wakening him. Somewhere there must be a wardrobe with her clothes in it, but she didn't know how to find it in the dark. Having decided to wait till tomorrow, she found that falling asleep was not easy; she had too many thoughts running through her head. However after an hour or so, she managed to doze off.
