You find a door leading off of the courtyard. There are guards in front of it but they seem to be drunk. (Drinking seems to be a VERY accepted practice in this society, you reflect.) They are asleep, so you slip quietly through the door.

Tiptoeing inside, the room is completely dark but you don't mind, as you are trying to avoid being seen. It is small and musty. You stumble into what seems to be a desk, and then stub your toe on a chair. You stifle a yelp.

But the MAIN thing you notice is the SMELL! It smells GHASTLY in here, like rotting flesh! YUCK! Why would something this horrible be right next to the beautiful courtyard? You sit down in the chair and hold your nose, hoping the Emperor and his servants go out of the area soon. You can still hear them through the door.

"I feel in need of a bit of good conversation", says Cartagia's voice. "Leave me." The servants' footsteps head away. "Conversation"?! you think. There's no-one in here!

The door creaks open. You attempt to dive under the desk but there's no time. The Emperor comes in with a small dim lamp--and two things happen at once.

First, he sees you. And he is NOT happy that you have barged into his private room. Not at all.

Secondly, now that you can see the room, you notice that the horrible smell is coming from the fact that across the desk is a row of SEVERED HEADS!

You only have enough time to do ONE thing. What is it?

1. You can attempt to talk your way out of this.
2. Or, you can just RUN FOR IT!
