"Er, excuse me," Fred said rather nervously. Belboz spun round. "A djinn!"
he said on
seeing Astra.
"You don't see many of those these days. And you, sir, I suppose must be
her master.
You are most fortunate. And I see you've brought your dog along too. My
name is Belboz. I don't get many
visitors - not many come to the Southern Caverns, of course, and those who
do normally
are heroes who head
straight for the dragon. So I'm pleased to meet you. Are you here by pure
chance, or
is there something I can do for you?"
Fred wondered whether Belboz could really be as guileless as he appeared, or whether it was an act put on for their benefit. Whichever was the case, Fred knew he had no real alternative to being totally frank as he told Belboz why they wanted his aid. When Fred had finished telling their story, he waited tensely for Belboz's response. Astra had said that Belboz could free her and also defeat the dragon, but would he chose to do so? After all, if he wanted to defeat the dragon, why hadn't he done so already? And Fred knew from Astra that Belboz was a necromancer, which automatically made him a somewhat dubious character in Fred's book. Would it be possible to use the second wish to compel him to help them against his will, if that proved necessary? That sounded as though it might be very risky. After pondering for a moment, Belboz said:
