"You don't come any further until you've declared yourself," the man
said. "Are you
for the dragon or against her?" Shen Tso recalled that according to Belboz
the dragon had once been
the original Shen Tso, and thus was presumably female. (Something
that had
not been known back in Allaria, where the dragon had generally been
assumed to be male.)
What should she say? The wrong answer might get a crossbow bolt put through her, and she stood too far away from the man to have any real chance of rushing him before he could shoot. Was the bowman someone who, like her, had swum the lake on a quest to destroy the dragon and had shrunk as a result? Or was he working for the dragon? That he wore chain mail that seemed to fit him well, and had a crossbow that was the right size, suggested he might be. Another pointer might be the fact that he knew the dragon was a "she". "Speak!" the man said, growing impatient as she hesitated. She could see that he was starting to get twitchy. She would have to say something.
