Falk received this information only hours after Stacy and Julie had left.
He spent several minutes cursing the unknown murderer, the New Jersey
police who had somehow permitted this to happen, Julie and Stacy for
needlessly complicating his life, and himself for not anticipating
something like this. Then he sighed, picked up the phone, and dialed
Stacy's apartment.
Stacy hung up the phone, her face ashen, and relayed the news to Julie. "Do they have any idea who was responsible?" asked Julie, after taking a long moment to let the news sink in. "No," said Stacy, "but I imagine we can make a guess or two." "If any of his employers escaped, they might have murdered him to keep him quiet," mused Julie. "As I understand it, he did know quite a bit about the operation." "That's one possibility," said Stacy. "There may be others, too. If Hooker and company messed up other peoples' lives the way they messed up ours, someone may have been out for revenge." "I didn't know of anyone else at the complex whose memory had been erased," said Julie, "but I suppose it's possible. What else?" Stacy grimaced. "The Department of Defense was awfully keen on getting hold of my research. It's probably paranoia, but I can't help but wonder how desperate they'd be to keep anyone else from having it." Julie gave a low whistle. "I hope you're wrong," she said, "but if that's the case -- or if it was Hooker's employers trying to keep him quiet -- then we could be in a great deal of danger." "That's what Falk thinks, too." "So," said Julie, "what should we do?"
