The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13885

Robert Dean - He is the DC labor lawyer who gets an slipped a video of a murder. Went to counseling for a year with Carla in order to save their marriage when it came apparent to Carla that something was happening between Dean and Rachel Banks.

Carla Dean - Robert's wife. Also a lawyer and member of the ACLU. Is strongly opposed to the Telecommunications and Privacy Bill and anything, really, that infringes on privacy of individuals. Also believes that the government has always been spying on ordinary Americans. Believes that They have the capabilities that Robert is finding out first hand that the NSA has.

Eric Dean - Robert's son.

Rachel Banks - Robert's contact for Brill. Also had a thing awhile ago back in their college days......and an affair that put a severe strain on the guy's marriage. Currently in love with another married man (that is NOT Dean).

Brill - (really named Edward Lyle) was an Army enlisted who had rapid promotion and was really good at intelligence and communications. Joined NSA in 1965. Lots of black bags and deleted (uh....right). Went into Iran in 1980, and then disappeared after the Shah took over. He had been in their listening in on Russian military communications when this happened (and help in shipping arms to the Afghanistan rebels). It was a press disaster waiting to happen (abiding and aiding the new enemy), so the Agency conveniently forgot about him ("They did what they had to do." he said). A touch on the paranoid side (always looking for the Agency to close the books....on HIM), was less than thrilled with Dean when he made contact with him. He had a friend who was Rachel's father. Each promised the other if they got out, they d take care of the other s family. During the mission in Iran, the Shah came to power, the people who d worked with him and his partner turned on them. Brill got out but Rachel's father died. So Rachel became his promise to Rachel's father, since she was all that the father had.

In the movie (which didn't have Reynolds trying to kidnap Eric and kill Carla), Brill only gave reluctant help to Dean in part that it was the only way to strike back at those who had killed Rachel.....in part to close down Reynolds before Reynolds closed him down. In the story (which did have Reynolds trying to kidnap Eric and kill Caral) the reasons are similar. That is, that is in order to strike back at those who'd tried to kill Rachel. However, he also is doing it to strike back at those who'd attempt to kill Carla and kidnap Eric.

There are certain rules of engagement that people like Brill live by, and Reynolds made the unfortunate mistake of breaking them.....

Thomas Reynolds - The bad guy. Is doing the terrible things he's doing out of in part of doing it "for the greater good." However, there also seems to be the motivation of Reynolds trying to make Deputy Director in the NSA; something that should have should have happened five or perhaps more years ago.

Is a bit more desperate than his movie counterpart in that he also ordered the death of Carla and kidnaping of Eric. The reasoning was that once Rachel Banks was dead, the police would reason that Dean came back to his house to take Eric with him in a mad flight....and killed Carla when she tried to stop him.....

Kruge - One of the "military cutouts" hired by Reynolds in order to help in this operation. Appears to be unaware of the true nature of this operation, since this has been billed as a training operation. Was not involved in the kidnaping/killing part of this fracas. Stole Dean's blender when he and the other goons broke into Dean's house one time in a search for the video and to install hidden surveillance equipment to better spy on the man.

Jones - Another of the "military cutouts" hired by Reynolds. Has a bit of a temper witnessed early on when asked about an assault done on one of those in his chain of command. Jones had replied "He was an asshole, sir, and deserved it, if you'll excuse me." Besides personality problems like this, he appears to not be involved (or aware) of the real nature of this operation.

Hicks - Reynold's assistant. Hired Jones and Kruge. Present when the murder of Hamersly took place.

Bigham - NSA goon who, under directions of Reynolds, killed Hamersly. Posed as a police detective in the first attempt to trick Dean into giving them the video tape.

Pratt - Fellow NSA goon under Reynolds. Was the other fake police detective in the attempt to get the tape from Dean.

Feidler - One of the head NSA techs who monitors Dean throughout the operation. Did NOT know that this operation was not a training operation because later actions done by him and a fellow tech at a crucial point would be contradictory if he had been "in on it."

There are others, but they are not important at this point in time.

Now, in addition to this confusion, this "crossover" is not JUST a Doctor Who/Enemy of the State crossover, but also a Sneaker crossover!.

Besides those characters already mentioned in episode 12504, there are two other worthies of note from that movie called Sneakers.

Bernard Abbot - This is the head NSA official who had come out from the East Coast to San Francisco to obtain the Item from the Sneakers (i.e. take it from them). While in the movies the ultimate intentions of this figure are at best shadowy, in this story his intentions are clear. It is clear, through several twists and turns in the plot, that Abbot is part of a faction within the NSA opposed to the reasons why the Item (a super code breaker useful only to spy upon Americans and such) was created. In his actions and words, he takes the less easy route in trying to handle problems imposed to him and his group by those like the Sneakers. In other words, while Reynolds would have likely killed the Sneakers, Abbot tries to strike a less....terminal solution.

Mary - this is one of the NSA operatives that Abbot took along with him in his attempt to get the Item from the Sneakers. From the movie, we saw that when Carl forwent all other things in order to keep silent about the Item, instead only wanting her phone number, she was charmed beyond words and gave Carl her number. It was looking like the beginning of something between the Sneaker known as Carl and her. In the story, at first, she was uninterested in Carl since the scenario that would have revealed Carl's more appealing side wasn't played out. Then, when it became clear that both shared an interest in the TV show, Doctor Who things began to click. That aside, she and a few others have been great sources of information on the Doctor, who unexpectedly came into the middle of this mess in the first place....live...in the literal flesh!

See, needless to say, Doctor Who was just a fictional character in this universe....until the real Doctor came to it and got caught up in things......

  1. Finally, that aside, what gives with these "factions" in the NSA!?
