The Never Ending Quest - Episode 13850

What is going on?

Bascially, what is happening here is what passes for real life is imitating a Hollywood movie called Enemy of the State.

(Author's Note: See the website - http://eostranscript.8m.com/eostranscripthtml.html for fuller details of the beginning oft he movie to get a clearer picture if you wish. That, or rent the movie.)

The next tells what was hinted at throughout earlier episodes. We will explore what happening in the movie up to the point where Dean got to Rachel's place....and came upon Doctor Who's group.

In this Touchstone Pictures movie, one Robert Clayton Dean is a successful Washington D.C. labor lawyer who was slipped by a nature conservationist (Daniel Zavitz), unbeknownst to him, a video tying a highly placed official in the NSA (Thomas Reynolds) to a political murder (of one Congressman Phil Hamersly). Reynolds had been trying to sway the congressman so that a key piece of legislation which would do SO much in advancing his seemingly stalled career could pass into law. However, the congressman was deeply opposed to the bill, stating that it would allowed the U.S. government to more easily monitor others for intelligence purposes. Basically, Hamersly saw the bill as something that would lead to a society like that found in the novel, 1984. That being like it was, Hamersly would not be swayed even a little bit, so Reynolds had Hamersly murdered, and his death made to appear like a heart attack. The whole event was captured by a camera used for tracking the migration of certain aquatic birds (the camera activated whenever motion caught it's attention).

The fact was soon discovered, and Zavitz was soon running for his life and ran into Dean who was shopping for his wife's Chirstmas present. Zavitz slip the tape amongst the purchases, and soon died underneath the wheels of a speeding fire truck trying to get away from his pursuers.

That's what happened in the movie.....

Then, after seeing Zavitz slipping the tape into Dean's bags by watching the security camera recordings of the store that Dean ran into Zavitz, soon Reynolds and friends were trying to regain the tape. So the NSA operatives of Reynolds, after having no luck at gaining the tape by one means (impersonating policemen and asking to see Dean's purchases to find the tape and take it), had discredited Dean by making him appear to have ties to Mob and was having an affair. This alienated Dean from his wife and got him fired from his job at his law firm.

Now, Dean had, earlier in the day, confronted the local crime boss with a video tape of his own (made by a surveillance expert named Brill referred to him by a friend and one time love, Rachel Banks). On THAT particular tape was evidence of the Crime Lord, Pintero, assorting with the local Union officials (which violated Pintero's terms of parol). Basically, Dean was doing this to get Pintero to lay off on the Union so the workers wouldn't be railroaded into a sweetheart contract. When things started to fall apart, Dean suspected that Brill had something to do with it, so got Rachel Banks to tell him how to contact Brill so Dean could fix things. Of course, things didn't go as planned at all for Dean.

Dean, after escaping from an NSA operative posing as Brill, soon encountered the real Brill.....at gunpoint! That is, Brill had him at gunpoint. Brill was the cautious type, and was less than thrilled about Dean tracking him down. After a rather heated discussion on the roof of a building, Brill told Dean (from examining the electronic bugs placed on the lawyer) that the NSA was after him. Brill then left Dean, who was soon running for his very life from the very same NSA operatives who were after him for the tape of the murder (who mistakenly thought that, through snatches of conversation eavesdropped on by them, that the tape that Dean had used on Pintero was the tape of the murder). Dean had to shed his clothing and replace them with a borrowed hotel bathrobe (to rid himself of any leftover electronic tracing devices). Still being chased, Dean got chased into a hotel supply closet. Only by setting off the fire alarm with a improvised torch (chemical laden toilet brush held up to a fire sprinkler head) was Dean able to get away by pretending to have been overcome by the smoke released by the fire that had started accidently by him (the torch's fire kind of got out of hand). Taken away by ambulance, Dean grabbed a policeman's gun and forced the ambulance to halt, and Dean got out and started running again, knowing that he must get well away and out of sight before the NSA goons caught up with him (who had been following the ambulance).

Dean managed to slip away (after a wild chase though a traffic tunnel), steal some clothing for himself (since he was very noticeable in his bathrobe) at gunpoint from a street cleaner who'd been cleaning his street sweeper.

Now less conspicuous, Dean first manages to get back to his house undetected and (while in their unbugged garage) win Carla (his wife) back over to his side. That done, Dean stumbles across, in the play of things that his son had taken the very thing that the NSA goons were after (it was a toy that had hidden within it the scenes of the videoed murder).

With a bit of help, Dean is able to get from his son (undetected by the NSA) the toy.

He then was going to contact Brill again (who could help him with the video....since it had been compressed into a disk) and meet with Rachel again...to warn her about the dealings about. But in the movie, Dean had found Rachel murdered and his clothing and a few other things of his strewn about the place....implicating him for the murder.

Yes, Reynolds had some of his goons kill Rachel to frame Dean for the murder. As a murder suspect, dean would have been easier to find AND if Dean ever had gone public against Reynolds....he'd be disbelieved.

But, that was the movies, and while things did get better for Dean (the good guys winning.... as per Hollywood standards).....this is a different story.

This is what differed when the Doctor and friends made the scene.....

First, the death of Zavitz (and one Lenny Bloom who'd Zavitz was going to go to show the murder video) had been faked in order to get the guy to safety.

Second, there was the fact that while Dean had been running from the NSA goons, just like in the movies, he'd been dogged at every turn (secretively) by some of Doctor Who's group. That was to make sure to aid the poor guy in case he really needed it.

Third, as you probably have already seen that Rachel Banks is alive and well due to the timely rescue of the adventurers. Oh, and the would be murderers got an interesting impulse to speak the truth....and nothing but the truth....

Last, due to the need to get their hands on some working video equipment (Inquirer's was still in boxes) the adventurers had approached and finally gotten the aid of Brill.

  1. But before we go into just WHY Reynolds is nervous right now (besides obvious facts), let's review on a few of the players in this movie crossover, eh?
